"sm70- why not Duesenberg?" (sm70-whynotduesenberg)

I've just discovered these two little red dot lights in between the two map lights on the bottom of my mirror. They come on with the headlights. Do they serve a specific purpose, or are they just for a little more ambient light?

Something for the auto-dimming mirror? (If you have that)

They're just there for a bit of ambient light. Helps you navigate the interior when it's incredibly dark outside. Frequently they're red or orange to avoid messing up your night vision (though VW used to make them blue - not sure if they still do that).

I know that VW had them so you could "read" maps and stuff without distracting the driver.

In-car sensors for the alarm?

I do, but this is the sensor.

Our Jetta has them. I think it's for ambient light. I heard somewhere that your eyes react faster at night when gauges, displays, etc. are lit up in red as opposed to other colors.

More ambient lighting then I guess. Cause aren't Audi's dash-lights red?

Well it's a VAG product so that makes sense.

Now the only dealerships you can go to have 4 rings on them.

Red and white, yes. And the verdict seems to be ambient light.

Shouldn't have looked directly at the red lights then.

Mazda uses blue... they call them... DOWN LIGHTS.

That's where I saw them. One of my friends has a CX-9 with those blue lights.
"Down lights". That's pretty straight forward.
I think VW/Audi might call them "Interior Visual Reference Cue Illumination Diodes". That'll be $400.

Mazda has funny names for lights. You want the bulb that lights up the high beam reflector in a 1st gen 6, but doesn't project light like the high beam? Interior Mirror Bulb.
Dome lamp/reading lamp? ROOM LAMP.

Interesting...our 'o5 Honda Ody has one circular incandescent one, same color as other interior lights but about 1/6 brightness, kinda helpful sometimes...
(Not the Ody, but same idea...)
